She recalls that a near accurate definition of mental health is:

a.) absence of mental illness
b.) presence of mental organization
c.) absence of negative ways of dealing with problems
d.) presence of mental stability

2.) Psychiatric nursing pertains to:

a.) assessment of behavior, planning and evaluation of care for individuals with mental disorders
b.) promotion of optimal mental health for individuals, through early diagnosis, treatment rehabilitation
c.) use of interaction between the nurse and the individuals, as a therapeutic tool of nursing
d.) independent, interdependent and dependent function of the nurse which are employed to assist patient regain mental health

3.) Earlier, Linda participated in a seminar on self-awareness. An advantage of having self-awareness when attending to a mentally disturbed patient is that she can:

a.) arrive at a better decision appropriate to patient’s needs rather than her own needs
b.) prevent personal feelings of patient from affecting her
c.) decide properly for the patient
d.) discuss nursing care more knowledgeably with her nursing superior

4.) Linda is mildly anxious as she takes an unscheduled quiz. Her anxiety level is characterized by:

a.) increased tension and reduce ability to perceive
b.) increased energy and alertness
c.) increased physical and emotional discomfort
d.) increased perception and elaboration of details

5.) If an individual is experiencing anxiety with decreased perception and there is selective inattention, he is said to be:

a.) moderately anxious
b.) in a state of severe anxiety
c.) mildly anxious
d.) In a state of panic

6.) Linda almost fails in the written test. She complains to her friend that instructor’s questions did not include those that were taken up in the classroom. What is this defense mechanism:

a.) Rationalization
b.) Denial
c.) Projection
d.) displacement

7.) Ludy is a middle-aged college professor whose husband is philandering. Instead of worrying and becoming sad, she devotes her energy and time to improving her teaching skills. This defense mechanism is:

a.) Displacement
b.) Sublimation
c.) Repression
d.) Compensation

8.) A political who is himself immoral keeps accusing a rival politician of graft and corruption. This is:

a.) Repression
b.) Conversion
c.) Projection
d.) Rationalization

9.) Displacement is seen in one of the following instances:

a.) a little boy patterns his own behavior to the person he is afraid of
b.) Josie has an unconscious dislike for her superior but covers this up by being extremely polite
c.) David’s work was criticized by his supervisor. At home he start shouting at his wife and children
d.) a young man begins to talk and act like his father who just died

10.) Linda is secretly is aversed to one of the staff nurses in the unit, but she tries hard to be likeable to her. This is a defense mechanism called:

a.) Suppression
b.) Projection
c.) Denial
d.) Repression

11.) The use of defense mechanism:

a.) protects the personality by controlling anxiety and reducing emotional pressure
b.) prepares individuals to respond to tensed situation
c.) serves as substitute for gratification of needs
d.) provides socially acceptable reasons for behavior

Please see the 1st comment for the ANSWER KEY.

Mang Tomas, 47 years consulted at the OPD for occipital headache light headedness, and

... visual disturbances. However, this compilation of sample questions from the 1990's has already helped produce two (2) professional nurses, the latest of which was Last December of 2007. We hope it will be useful to you too.

We have segregated the sample questions into the following categories:

1. Fundamentals (Funda);

2. Maternal;

3. Child;

4. Adults/Aged;

5. Obstetrics (OB);

6. Community Health;

7. Psychiatric; and

8. Medical-Surgical (MedSurg).

What does it take to pass the board?

An expensive review center? Definitely not. Last year, when I was contemplating my future as a nurse after three (3) years of the toughest course I ever took (I'm a second courser), a well-known personality on Philippine nursing review went to our college to sell a franchisee. Curious about him, he's like a god to nursing students, I attended his lecture.

It was pretty entertaining. There were some singing (in fairness, he can sing) and funny anecdotes emphasized by equally funny pictures on what we can expect as a nurse if we ever get "stuck" in our country.

There was not much I learned about taking the board during that two (2) hours but there was something that has taken root deep inside. I promised myself that I will never ever give a single centavo of my hard-earned money to somebody who makes fun of MY profession in my OWN country. So yeah, I took the board without some fancy review center. Although, truth be told, I'm even poorer than a church mouse and doesn't have that kind of money to throw around.

I have proven that we do not need to make somebody richer than they deserve to be in order to pass the board. These are the only things we need:

1. The RIGHT school.

The right nursing school does not necessarily mean the most expensive. The right nursing schools are those that offer extensive clinical experience. Lectures and theories, you forget them after a year.

2. Begin reviewing right at the start.

I don't mean reading and memorizing all those normal values. I don't even remember the heart rate for a new born. What we need is apply all those nursing stuff we learned inside the classroom in real situations.

3. Grab old copies of test questions (like this blog).

Get your hands on as many test questions as you can. The nursing examination is notoriously difficult because of all the trick questions therein. However, all answers are found in nursing and medical books. The only way to get through the tricks is to practice and familiarize ourselves with the questions, starting as early as possible.

4. Believe in yourself.

With the right preparation, you can pass any test thrown your way. Don't let what other people say about your school or your chances of passing affect you. Don't get involved in discussions about previous nursing board exams, the only thing you'll hear there is how difficult they are. In fact, ignore all your nursing school friends until after you passed the board. :D

5. Relax and have fun.

I went through nursing school without heavy books but I used to borrow some from a friend to press my uniform with. :D But don't have too much fun either. A proper balance between studies and fun is the way to go.

6. Communicate with HIM.

I hope you know the difference between praying and communicating. Communicate, HE always listens. Remember though that communication is two-way so we also have to listen.

We hope we can help with Number 3 by sharing this old compilation of Philippine Nursing Board Exam test questions.

Please excuse the advertisements, this blog is maintained by a high school student and a nursing graduate, not me. Any income this effort will generate will be shared by them. I do check it once in a while to see if they're doing fine.

And who am I? Names doesn't matter. I see myself everywhere, in the young people and the parents who dream of a better future for themselves and their families and who are willing to act in order to make it a reality.

Good luck and get going.
